Bridging the distance: What is driving Belarus, Myanmar closer together

Until recently, Belarus and Myanmar were more like diplomatic acquaintances than close partners. Geographic separation, the vast distance between them, and a consequent lack of major trade ties meant that their relations rarely topped either country’s foreign policy agenda. Today, the situation has fundamentally changed. Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing landed in Belarus for an official visit on 20 August, aiming, as Naypyidaw put it, to discuss «strengthening existing bilateral friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas of common interest.» These top-level talks, alongside meetings involving line ministries and business circles, will continue the intense political dialogue that has taken on a whole new dimension over the past 18 months.
