Today marks the 80th anniversary of the birth of People’s Artist of Belarus, outstanding ballerina Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya.

Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya was born in Minsk on June 4, 1946 in the family of the painter Henry Brzhozovsky. Since childhood, she has been interested in choreographic art. At first she studied in the dance club of the Minsk Palace of Pioneers, then at the Belarusian Choreographic College. The ballerina’s mentors were Honored Artist of Belarus Nina Mlodzinskaya and People’s Artist of Belarus Irina Savelyeva.

After completing her studies at the college, Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya joined the troupe of the State Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of the BSSR (now the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of the Republic of Belarus) and shone on its stage for almost 20 years. The first major work on the stage of the theater was the role of Solveig in the ballet Peer Gynt. In 1970, Lyudmila completed an internship at the Leningrad Kirov Opera and Ballet Theater (now the State Academic Mariinsky Theater) in the class of People’s Artist of the USSR Natalia Dudinskaya.

Her creative experience, along with her excellent natural abilities and high professionalism, allowed Brzhozovskaya to become one of the brightest stars of the Belarusian ballet scene in its entire history. She performed leading roles in the ballets «After the Ball», «Swan Lake», «Spartacus», «Raymonda», «Bakhchisarai Fountain», «Don Quixote», «Sleeping Beauty», «Sylphide», «Giselle», «Chopiniana», «Paquita», «Cinzano Flower Festival» and others . Each part of Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya became a high creative achievement, a kind of artistic discovery. Her skill was determined by the completeness of the lines, the ability to combine the inner essence of the image with the plastic pattern of the dance. While working on the performances «Romeo and Juliet» and «Tristan and Isolde», the ballerina formed a creative duet with Yuri Troyan. For many years, the artists performed together and gave vivid emotions to ballet fans.

Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya was the first performer of the roles of Carmen in the Carmen Suite, Eva in The Creation of the World, Sweetheart in Carmine Burana, Masha in The Nutcracker directed by Valentin Elizariev. Together with the theater troupe, the artist has performed in more than 30 countries, participated in many art forums, and starred in television versions of the ballets Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the films Sold Laughter and Myth.

Critics wrote enthusiastically about Lyudmila Genrikhovna and her work. She was called «the ideal dancer», «the magician of movements», «the goddess of dance». The famous sculptor Zair Azgur claimed that «Lyudmila Brzozovskaya’s dance is a chain of moments that make up the confession of a caring and passionate heart.»... She herself is a work of art." The artists were inspired by the refined and spiritual beauty of this woman. And the audience who attended the performances created legends about her dancing.

In 1975, at the age of 29, Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the BSSR.

In 1987, the ballerina graduated from the Choreography Faculty of the Minsk Institute of Culture, and in 1989 she left the stage and began teaching. Since 1997, she has been a teacher-tutor at the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of the Republic of Belarus. A talented mentor, she brought up a whole galaxy of young artists who continued to develop the Belarusian ballet. Among her students are People’s Artists of Belarus — Olga Gaiko, Lyudmila Kudryavtseva and Irina Yeromkina.

In 2000, Lyudmila Brzhozovskaya was awarded the Philip Morris Ballet Award in the Life in Art category.

On December 6, 2023, at the age of 77, Lyudmila Genrikhovna passed away and was buried at the Eastern Cemetery in Minsk.
