Belarus’ Arutiunian reaches main draw of Tiburon Challenger in USA

Belarusian tennis player Erik Arutiunian has made it to the main draw of the ATP Challenger 125 tournament in Tiburon, USA, with a prize pool of $225,000, BelTA has learned.



To seal his main draw spot, world No. 600 Erik Arutiunian edged past Spencer Johnson of the USA (No. 451) in a double-tiebreak thriller: 7-6(4), 7-6(6). Earlier, in the opening qualifying round, Arutiunian dismissed another American, Nicholas Godsick (No. 1,193), with a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 victory. In the round of 32, Erik Arutiunian is set to clash with Braden Shick of the USA (No. 206). Another Belarusian in action, Daniil Ostapenkov (No. 554), opened his campaign by beating American Ozan Baris (No. 1407) 6-2, 6-2, before falling to France’s Timo Legout (No. 444) 3-6, 4-6 in the final qualifying round.

In the first round of the $1.2 million WTA 500 Guadalajara Open in Mexico, Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich (No. 197) lost to Türkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez (58) 1-6, 1-6. To book a spot in the quarterfinals, the Turkish player will next clash with world No. 16 Iva Jovic of the USA. Shymanovich had successfully qualified for the main draw earlier, defeating home favorite Ana Sofia Sanchez (No. 380) and American Lea Ma (No. 282). In the doubles draw, Shymanovich and her Czech partner Miriam Skoch are set to open their campaign against the American duo of Catherine Harrison and Dalayna Hewitt.

The tournaments in Mexico and the USA will conclude on 20 September.
