On his way to the final in the −97kg category, Kiryl Maskevich defeated Markus Ragginger of Austria (7-3), Murad Ahmadiyev of Azerbaijan (5-4), and Kiril Milov of Bulgaria (7-5, coming back from a 0-5 deficit). In the final, the Belarusian beat Artur Sargsian of Russia (7-1), avenging his defeat at the European Championships six months ago. Kiryl Maskevich finished third at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Croatia.
Kiryl Maskevich is now a two-time world champion. In 2021, he lost the World Championships final in Oslo to Zurabi Datunashvili. However, four years later, the Serbian wrestler was disqualified for an anti-doping rule violation, and the gold medal from the world championships in Norway was subsequently awarded to Kiryl Maskevich. The Belarusian is also a three-time European Championships medalist.
After three days of competition in Astana, the Belarusian team has three medals (1 gold and 2 bronze). Greco-Roman wrestlers Shuai Mamedau (-77kg) and Pavel Hlinchuk (-130kg) had earlier claimed bronze. Women’s wrestling will take place from 27 to 30 October, while freestyle wrestlers will compete from 29 October to 1 November.
