Belarus, Myanmar discuss ways to expand cooperation

16.09.2026 | 19:00

Myanmar is interested in cooperation with Belarus on a wide range of issues, State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich told the media following a meeting with National Security Adviser and Minister in the Office of the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Tin Aung San, BelTA has learned.

This is the first visit to Belarus by the National Security Adviser and Minister in the Office of the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Aleksandr Volfovich said he had met with Tin Aung San just three months ago in Moscow at an international conference, where Aleksandr Volfovich invited him to visit Belarus. The visit comes after an official visit to Belarus by Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in August.

The meeting focused, among other things, on implementing agreements previously reached in various areas, including the economy and agriculture, an area of particular interest to the Myanmar side. Security issues were also high on the agenda.

«There was a fairly broad exchange of views on the international situation, the formation of a multipolar world, the challenges, risks and threats that small states are increasingly facing, and modern threats, primarily cyber threats, threats related to drug trafficking and human trafficking, which is a problem for the Republic of the Union of Myanmar today,» Aleksandr Volfovich said.

Aleksandr Volfovich said that, in order to flesh out the agenda for the meeting, the Belarusian side had drafted and submitted to the Myanmar side a memorandum of cooperation, which was received with interest.

«The partners asked for some time to study and consider its provisions and subsequently agreed that such a document was needed. This framework document will help ensure more systematic work by our agencies, as they also coordinate matters related to the security and law enforcement sector,» Aleksandr Volfovich said.

According to him, Myanmar is interested in developing cooperation in education. Several students from Myanmar are currently studying at state universities in Belarus. An agreement has also been reached through the Belarusian Defense Ministry that 16 servicemen of the Myanmar Armed Forces will arrive in Belarus in the near future to study at the Military Academy. The Myanmar side asked for assistance for them during the initial stage.

«I assured them that everyone who comes to Belarus with good intentions will receive nothing but a friendly welcome,» he emphasized.

Myanmar has also expressed interest in Belarusian firefighting equipment and in matters related to the activities of the State Authority for Military Industry.

«We had a very good, warm conversation — genuinely constructive. The interest spans everything: agriculture and industry, our MAZ vehicles. The hosts would like to see our tractors in their fields. They asked for support from the State Secretariat of the Security Council in implementing the agreements and signing contracts on these matters,» he said.

«Perhaps the main outcome of our conversation is that we outlined further ways of cooperation, and this will indeed help bring our countries closer together,» Aleksandr Volfovich noted.
