Belarus’ Parliament speaker: Energy workers build foundation for national economy

13.05.2026 | 14:44
Energy workers build the foundation of the national economy and the basis for the development of all industries, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said during a meeting with the staff of the State Production Association of the Electric Power Industry Belenergo, which was held ahead of the 95th anniversary of the Belarusian energy system, BelTA has learned.

«You build the foundation for our national economy, for the advancement of all industries, agriculture, and the development of our country,» Igor Sergeyenko said, highlighting the vital role of the energy industry workforce.

Talking to the media after the meeting, the speaker noted that today, no matter what industry you look at, it cannot survive without electrical and thermal energy. He cited the Minsk Tractor Works as an example, adding that the industrial giant will celebrate its 80th anniversary in May. «Can you imagine the energy consumption required to manufacture such highly complex machinery?» Igor Sergeyenko pointed out.

The social welfare is equally dependent on electricity, particularly major scientific and practical medical centers, hospitals, operating rooms, and the highly complex equipment running there.

«Not to mention the life of an ordinary person, our average citizen, any of us,» the speaker added. «Life itself depends on energy.»

The speaker also noted that Belenergo comprises 16 organizations with a total workforce of 64,000 employees. «Energy workers are courageous, selfless people who tackle extremely difficult tasks around the clock and in all weather conditions, often working at extreme heights, operating sophisticated equipment, and dealing with the aftermath of various accidents and natural disasters,» he added.

«Your work is, in fact, comparable to military service,» Igor Sergeyenko said.

Therefore, the main goal of the meeting is to congratulate the staff of the State Production Association of the Electric Power Industry Belenergo on the 95th anniversary of the Belarusian energy system, to express sincere gratitude for their dedicated labor, and to discuss lawmaking activities, the speaker explained.

During the meeting with the staff, the chairman of the House of Representatives emphasized that he and his fellow MPs always find it a pleasure to meet with energy workers. Due to the specific nature of their work, these professionals are disciplined, detail-oriented, and precise. The speaker recalled that in 2025, the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant hosted a meeting of the House of Representatives Council which was also attended by the energy minister. Previously, a meeting was held with the staff of the Lukoml State District Power Plant. He added that draft laws, including those concerning the development of the energy industry, are regularly considered at sessions of the House of Representatives.

Igor Sergeyenko recalled that the first Belarusian power plant was established in Orekhovsk, Orsha District, back in 1930. The system continued to develop, was rebuilt after the Great Patriotic War, and underwent extensive modernization. In the 1960s and 1970s, agricultural production and rural communities were completely electrified. The Bereza and Lukoml state district power plants were constructed. The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant has become the face of Belarus’ modern energy system.

15 May 1931 is considered the official date of the establishment of the Belarusian energy system.
