Belarus proposes to launch negotiations on Eurasian Charter at UNGA session

14.05.2026 | 09:40

Belarus proposes to begin the negotiation process on the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century in September 2026, during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov said in a thematic article titled Why Eurasia Cannot Wait: A Charter for Our Time, the text of which has been posted on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BelTA has learned.

The idea of the Eurasian Charter has been discussed for nearly three years at international forums, during bilateral consultations, and in academic publications. Many Eurasian states have expressed their principled support. «But discussions, no matter how valuable, are not enough,» the minister emphasized. «The Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, as co-authors of the initiative, have prepared a concrete road map for moving from discussion to formal negotiations. This road map is outlined in an unofficial document (non-paper) that has been sent to our Eurasian partners.»

«We propose to begin the negotiation process in September 2026, during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, so that it culminates in the adoption of the Charter at a summit of Eurasian leaders, which would presumably take place before the end of 2027,» the article states.
