An analysis of surveys of contaminated territories conducted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Healthcare Ministry in 2021-2025, including soil sampling and assessments of radiation exposure to the population, showed a significant improvement in the situation in a number of areas located in radionuclide-contaminated areas. Under the current list, approved by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 75 of 8 February 2021, 2,022 settlements with a total population of 930,600 and 49 facilities are classified as being located in radioactive contamination zones.

«The resolution approves an updated list of settlements and facilities located in radioactive contamination zones, which includes 1,845 settlements (177 fewer), with a total population of 364,200, and 33 facilities (16 fewer). Among those removed from the current list are the towns of Gomel, Luninets, Lelchytsy and Ivye,» the press service said.

In coordination with the head of state, the resolution will enter into force on 1 January 2027. Free meal benefits for minors living and/or studying in educational institutions located in areas that will no longer be classified as contaminated will remain in effect until June 2027.
