Belarusians shift from U.S. dollars to national currency deposits

27.08.2026 | 13:00

Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus Andrei Kartun shared insights on how the country’s foreign exchange market is evolving on the air of the Belarus One TV channel, BelTA has learned.

«The total volume of retail deposits in our country has surpassed the psychological milestone of Br25 billion. Notably, 70% of these are ruble-denominated accounts, whereas just a few years ago about half were in U. S. dollars. For the third consecutive year, the population has been a net seller of foreign currency,» Andrei Kartun noted.

The U. S. dollar no longer commands the same level of trust as before. According to IMF estimates, the U. S. currency has lost twenty percentage points in the composition of international reserves over recent years

«The foreign exchange market has transformed, and we, consequently, have been forced to change our approaches as well. For instance, the euro’s share used to consistently exceed 20% in the breakdown of payments. Now, it is approaching zero, as there is virtually no demand for the euro,» Andrei Kartun said.
