BMZ chief names optimal monthly steel output

19.08.2026 | 15:00

A monthly output of 140,000 tonnes of steel is the optimal production level for Belarusian Steel Works, Director General of BMZ — Managing Company of the Belarusian Metallurgical Company Aleksandr Sakovich said during a meeting with staff at one of the plant’s divisions on 18 August, BelTA learned from the company.

The head of the plant noted that the situation on the global steel market is a continuation of trends that emerged in the second half of last year, characterized by a steel surplus on world markets. «Demand was weak, and prices went down,» Aleksandr Sakovich said.

«But by mid-2026, we set a course to increase production volumes. In May, we raised output to 122,000 tonnes; June closed at around 130,000 tonnes; and July reached 141,000 tonnes. The target for August is to maintain that level,» he emphasized.

According to him, 140,000 tonnes of steel per month is now the optimal output for the plant. «We should be cautious about further increases. Our task now is to hold our ground so that when market conditions change, the plant can quickly ramp up production, boost revenue, and thereby increase profits,» the director general said.

He cited cost savings and expense optimization as key reserves available to the company. «We continue to work actively in this direction. In July, we purchased a trial batch of a new type of raw material at a price 20% lower than the traditional one. Tests showed good results,» he said.

The director general also said he wants to hear suggestions on improving efficiency from the workers themselves. Employees can leave their ideas in a specially installed suggestion box.

The Belarusian steel mill BMZ is a high-tech metallurgical enterprise. It structurally consists of production units linked by a single technological chain — steelmaking, rolling, pipe, hardware, and infrastructure workshops.
