Brest farmer grows giant pumpkin weighing 240 kilograms

21.09.2026 | 13:00

Amateur farmer Alexander Demeshko, from the village of Malye Sukharevichi in the Brest district, has grown a giant pumpkin weighing a quarter of a ton (240 kg). And this is not even the final result. The impressive harvest was recently featured on the STV television program.

According to the farmer’s own calculations, the fruit will continue to grow for another 20 days, gaining weight daily. The owner assures that the pumpkin was cultivated using strictly organic methods—the only fertilizers used were potassium, calcium, and phosphorus.

Growing such a giant requires a highly specialized approach. The pumpkin must be actively protected from excessive sunlight, as UV rays can cause the rind to become too tough and rigid, which would restrict the fruit’s further expansion.

«It all starts with a single seed. First, a tiny sprout emerges, much like a regular seedling, and then all this massive growth comes from that one seed, just so you understand,» Alexander Demeshko explained. «It requires care just like a small child. You really have to tend to it. There are certain secrets to this agricultural technique.»

Soon, this record-breaking vegetable is set to be showcased at a regional agricultural fair. To transport the giant to the regional center, special heavy-duty equipment will likely be required.
