Yelena Zhuk’s research focuses on modern methods of radiation diagnostics for malignant tumors in gynecologic oncology. The study, which offers an innovative approach to cancer diagnostics, is the culmination of 20 years of work. The model developed by the professor helps identify pathologies of the female reproductive system more quickly. «This model allows for a fairly quick and accurate diagnosis of lymph node involvement. It’s quite simple to use. A formula is inserted into a standard Excel file, and based on the entered parameters, a certain percentage probability of metastases is calculated,» said Yelena Zhuk.
She noted that the development of a mathematical model makes it possible to predict adverse disease progression, which serves as a guide for personalized therapy. It seeks to prevent the disease from advancing and to save the patient’s life.
The method is based on MRI diagnostics. Depending on the condition of the lymph nodes, doctors can see the full picture of the disease: visualize the lesion in detail and identify metastases at the early stages, in order to gain time and save a patient’s life. «To achieve [good] treatment results, you need to diagnose correctly. At this stage, I tried to find and detect small signs that would allow me to suspect that the lymph node was abnormal, that there was some kind of disorder,» the professor explained.
The method she developed is successfully used in clinical practice throughout the country. The model has also been integrated into the training process.
