Expert explains how Minsk extends service life of its roads

Gorremavtodor closely cooperates with research institutions such as the Belarusian Road Research Institute BeldorNII and Belarusian National Technical University (BNTU), Artem Ganchar, Deputy General Director of the State Production Association Gorremavtodor at the Minsk City Executive Committee, said in the latest episode of BelTA’s project The Nation Speaks.

Together with BNTU, an asphalt concrete with increased deformation resistance has been developed. «At present, it is probably the optimal solution for reducing the likelihood of rutting,» Artem Ganchar noted. «This year, together with BNTU, we updated it and made minor adjustments. We continue to work on improving it.»

According to him, work is being carried out together with BeldorNII on the installation of protective layers, the composition of which the institute is constantly optimizing. In addition, road workers continue to use the proven jet-injection method using Taifun-type units. This technology makes it possible to eliminate local damage to the asphalt concrete surface as quickly as possible using a mixture of emulsion and crushed stone.

Artem Ganchar drew special attention to the problem of the settlement of storm drain inlets, which often occurs in the first lanes due to high dynamic loads from public transport. «This year, we began using concrete accessory units on certain sections of the street and road network. Previously, they were used as support rings for inspection manholes, but now, together with the Minsk City Executive Committee, we have developed rectangular reinforced concrete structures that are installed directly under the storm drain inlets. This is a single integral structure that has replaced brick masonry and other materials,» he explained.

In addition, this year, so-called floating manhole covers have been used for the first time. «This is a manhole cover that is essentially the same storm drain inlet with slots, but it has 5–7 cm wide margins around its perimeter. Asphalt concrete is packed underneath it. When vehicles pass over it, thanks to the layer of asphalt between the concrete accessory unit and the storm drain inlet itself, there is no hard impact but rather smoother shock absorption,» Artem Ganchar said.

As a pilot project, the new stormwater inlets have been installed on Dzerzhinsky Avenue, on the section between Gursky Street and Kosmonavtov Street. «We will see how they perform. At the very least, we expect the things to be better than before,» Artem Ganchar said.
