According to Sergei Kabak, there is no such thing as an ideal road pavement design, each is designed for specific operating conditions. «When developing a project, the designer selects the most optimal combination of structural layers made from appropriate materials that ensure the road can withstand the required traffic load, depending on the road category, pavement type, and service life,» the specialist explained.

«The most resistant to weather and climate factors, as well as to traffic loads, are cement concrete pavements, which have a maximum service life of 25 years. The trend toward increasing their number in our country is quite noticeable,» the specialist noted. «Our institute conducted monitoring of cement concrete roads built back in the Soviet era. We found pavements that, after 35–40 years of service, are still in satisfactory condition.»

At the same time, Sergei Kabak pointed out that cement concrete pavements also have disadvantages: they are difficult to repair, more expensive to build, and require a more specialized, costly, and careful approach to maintenance.
