Fine fiber, high strength: new flax variety introduced in Belarus

25.08.2026 | 17:00

A new late-maturing fiber flax variety, Accent, developed at the Institute of Flax, has been included in the State Register of Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

The plant produces tall, straight stems and is used to create long, strong fiber. The potential flax straw yield (raw material for future textiles) of this new variety is 99 centners per hectare.

Accent has good decorication properties: its stems ripen evenly, allowing the fiber to be easily and quickly separated from woody particles. Moreover, when growing up to 1.1 meters, the stem remains flexible. While ordinary flax can turn into brittle straw in hot weather, Accent retains its elasticity. The new variety is also resistant to fusarium, a dangerous disease that can be fatal for other varieties.

The fiber from this new variety will be fine, smooth, and strong. It is used to produce premium linen garments that retain their appearance after dozens of washes, as well as high-end home textiles. The yield of long fiber is nearly 14%, making this variety a valuable raw material for the light industry.

This season, Accent is beginning to prove itself on Russian fields, where it is undergoing state variety trials.
