For the regional center, June 26 is a landmark date in history. On this day in 1944, as a result of heavy fighting, the city was recaptured from German troops, and 118 residents who could still stand on their feet came out to meet the Soviet army. Vitebsk, which was almost completely destroyed, could not be restored, according to experts. However, its residents did not give up in the face of difficulties and revived businesses, built new houses and restored the ancient city on the Vitba River to its former greatness.

Today it is one of the largest and most developed industrial, educational and cultural centers in Belarus. His main brand, the Slavyansky Bazar Vitebsk International Art Festival, is known far beyond the borders of our country. Many painters, writers and poets glorified the regional center in their works.

The celebration in honor of the City Day began with a rally on Victory Square. Representatives of regional and city authorities, public associations, residents and guests of Vitebsk of all ages laid flowers at the memorial complex in honor of Soviet soldiers-liberators, partisans and underground fighters of Vitebsk region. The participants of the patriotic action paid tribute to the heroic deed of the victorious generation and honored the memory of the fallen, including the victims of the punitive forces from among civilians.

The celebration of the City Day will continue today with a beauty and grace contest, in which charming residents of the regional center will participate, and tomorrow there will be numerous recreation and entertainment venues for Vitebsk residents.
