Indian lumber importer to enter Belarusian commodity exchange market

25.02.2026 | 17:27

Megamet, one of the largest importers and distributors of coniferous lumber in India, plans to obtain accreditation at the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE) to participate in exchange trading of forest products. This agreement was reached following the visit of Megamet’s Director Nitin Kagzi to BUCE’s central office, BelTA learned from the BUCE press service.

According to the Indian entrepreneur, his company annually imports about 100,000 cubic meters of sawn timber from Europe and America. To store such volumes of wood, eight warehouse complexes with a total area of 14,000 square meters are used, located in Mumbai, Chennai, and Mundra. At present, Megamet is seeking additional sources of lumber supply, and Belarus, with its developed forestry sector, is of great interest to the Indian importer.

«My goal in visiting Belarus is to study the country’s export potential and to learn about the mechanism of purchasing lumber through exchange trading. Although our company has been engaged in timber import and distribution since 2007, we have never dealt with exchange platforms before. However, we are ready to learn and gain new experience, and therefore we expect our cooperation with the Belarusian exchange to be fruitful and mutually beneficial,» Nitin Kagzi noted.

From the perspective of developing exchange exports of woodworking products, India is considered one of the most promising markets for Belarus, primarily due to the scale of domestic demand and the high purchasing power of local importers. With a population of 1.5 billion, the country ranks among the world’s largest economies, with steadily growing timber consumption projected to reach 32 million cubic meters by 2030.

Currently, India is represented on BUCE by 14 companies, six of which were accredited in 2025. Last year, the total value of their exchange transactions reached $4.8 million, tripling the figure for 2024. Purchases of Belarusian lumber accounted for about 30% of the exchange trade between Belarus and India.

Founded in 2004, the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange conducted its first trading session in June 2005. BUCE is one of the largest commodity exchanges in Eastern Europe. Its main function is to assist Belarusian enterprises with export and foreign companies with entering the Belarusian market. BUCE sells a wide range of metal, forestry and agricultural products, industrial and consumer goods.
