Silvery clouds over Belarus

01.07.2026 | 14:22

Silvery clouds were seen in the night sky over Belarus on 1 July. Silvery clouds are a relatively rare atmospheric phenomenon that can only be seen during the dark hours when stars are visible in the sky.

In Belarus and neighboring countries, the season for observing them usually begins in late May, peaks in July, and ends in early August.

These are extremely rarefied clouds that form at an altitude of about 80km above the Earth's surface. Their formation involves meteoric dust, on which moisture condenses and clouds of ice crystals form at an altitude ten times higher than ordinary tropospheric clouds.
