Trade, peace, new projects: Key takeaways from Ryzhenkov’s meetings at UNGA

Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov held a number of official meetings on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly’s high-level week in New York on 22 September, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.



During the meeting with Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanár, the parties discussed the entire range of bilateral relations and potential avenues for their development in today’s challenging environment. The foreign ministers also reviewed the regional situation and expressed confidence in the need to keep communication channels open to facilitate a swift settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

During the meeting with Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi, the parties discussed the schedule of upcoming visits and meetings, as well as the agenda for the planned session of the joint trade and economic commission. 

«The parties emphasized that there is no alternative to a peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Middle East. They also discussed prospects for promoting the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century,» the ministry’s press service said.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Maxim Ryzhenkov met with Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Mahmoud Thabit Kombo to discuss preparations for the upcoming visit of the Belarusian prime minister to the country. The two ministers focused particularly on pre-visit meetings between representatives of the two countries’ business communities and on identifying areas for concrete joint projects.

The meeting with Mongolian Minister of Foreign Affairs Battsetseg Batmunkh focused on preparations for a high-level visit of a Mongolian delegation to Belarus. «The parties confirmed the need to finalize a number of bilateral treaties and agreements regulating relations in various fields as soon as possible. They also discussed organizing a business forum and meetings between representatives of the two countries’ business communities during the visit, covering various areas of cooperation ranging from agricultural mechanization to industrial cooperation, healthcare, and education,» the ministry said.

During the meeting with Nicaraguan Co-Minister of Foreign Affairs Valdrack Ludwing Jaentschke Whitaker, the parties focused on reviewing the entire spectrum of the bilateral agenda, including the implementation of decisions made by the joint trade and economic commission. The diplomats also touched upon the situation in Central America and agreed to maintain mutual support within international organizations.

Upcoming high-level visits were discussed during the meeting with Botswana’s Minister of International Relations Phenyo Butale. The foreign ministers touched upon expanding the framework of bilateral cooperation, establishing assembly plants for Belarusian machinery in Botswana, and increasing the number of Botswana students studying in Belarus.

During the meeting with Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohieldin Salem, the diplomats exchanged views on ensuring food security. This primarily concerns a broad supply base of equipment and machinery, as well as training Sudanese students in relevant fields in Belarus.

«The parties highly praised their cooperation and mutual support within international organizations. The Sudanese minister of foreign affairs provided an update on the country’s socio-economic development and achievements in combating terrorism,» the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.

The meeting with Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski focused on evaluating the current state of Belarusian-Polish relations and exploring ways for their further development in the interests of both nations. The parties also discussed the regional situation. 

Furthermore, Maxim Ryzhenkov held brief talks with the foreign ministers of Togo, Zimbabwe, Laos, and Indonesia, as well as representatives of CIS member states, touching upon pressing issues of bilateral cooperation.
