Prime Minister of Belarus Aleksandr Turchin is on a working trip to Vitebsk Oblast where new Belarusian machines and vehicles for harvesting corn are being trialed among other things, BelTA has learned.

In Polotsk District Aleksandr Turchin visited a field of the agricultural enterprise OAO Novyye Goryany. The enterprise harvests grain maize, getting 92 centners per hectare on the average. High-powered harvesters, including all-terrain half-track machines made by Gomselmash, were demonstrated in action. In the field the machines demonstrated two types of corn harvesting: for cornage (a grain-and-cob mix) and for grain.

Sergei Levkovich, Acting Chairman of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee, told reporters: «Growing corn for grain is one of the main areas of work for the next 4-5 years. We will develop it. As practice has shown, corn grows in the region. If we grow it according to the technology, we will be able to get a good result. This year we will overcome the target of threshing more than 200,000 tonnes of corn grain. Vitebsk Oblast has never had such a harvest in its history.»

He also noted that this crop is particularly valuable for the feed base. «It will allow providing animal husbandry with the necessary volume of fodder. We cannot do without corn. The main thing is the harvesting timeframe. In conditions of our region a certain fleet of machines is necessary in order to harvest this crop on time,» Sergei Levkovich added.

He said that next year the northern region intends to make the first purchases of new Belarusian harvesters for harvesting corn, which will help gather in the crops on waterlogged soils as well.
