Murmuration (from the Latin murmuratio, meaning «murmuring» or «rustling») is a phenomenon of coordinated flight involving massive flocks of birds. Gathering into enormous groups, the birds move as a single living organism, creating complex, ever-changing three-dimensional shapes in the sky.
Even though the birds fly at tremendous speeds (up to 40–50 km/h or 25–31 mph) and are just tens of centimeters apart, collisions never happen. The English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who witnessed such a flock back in 1799, wrote that the birds moved «like smoke and like fog, devoid of their own will,» and this vision haunted him for the rest of his life.
For a long time, scientists believed that some kind of «collective consciousness» or telepathy controlled the birds. However, in 2008, physicists from the STARFLAG project in Rome filmed the flocks with synchronized cameras and reconstructed a 3D model of their flight.
It turned out there is no single leader in the flock. Each starling tracks the movement of just six or seven nearest neighbors, regardless of how dense the flock is. Thanks to this rule, signals about danger or course changes spread from one edge to another almost instantly—like ripples on water. And the high visual acuity of birds’ eyes allows them to react to changes faster than humans ever could.
Why do birds put on this show?
In reality, this isn’t a dance but a brilliant survival strategy. The main reason for murmuration is self-preservation and protection from avian predators (sparrowhawks and peregrine falcons). When tens of thousands of birds move as one constantly shifting cloud, a predator simply can’t lock its gaze on a single target—the prey keeps «dissolving.»
Moreover, scientists suggest that such maneuvers help the flock gather maximum information about the surrounding environment, and experienced birds may use this to «teach» younger ones the art of flight.
Where can you see murmuration?
This is a global phenomenon found in various corners of the world:

Italy (Rome): In winter, millions of starlings roost right above the historic city center, Termini Station, and the Tiber River.

Denmark: On the Jutland Peninsula (Wadden Sea National Park), this phenomenon is called Sort Sol («Black Sun»). In autumn and spring, up to 1.5 million birds gather here, literally blocking out the sunset.

United Kingdom & USA: Historic piers in Brighton and Blackpool, the Scottish village of Gretna Green, and New York’s Central Park.

In Belarus, these «bird dances» are regularly observed in late summer and autumn.
Impressive flocks are often filmed in the Grodno and Brest regions over harvested fields, as well as in reed beds near water bodies. One such event occurred in 2023 over the village of Bolshaya Zhornovka (Grodno District), where thousands of birds created an incredible geometric show.
When and where to see it?

Season. During autumn and spring migrations, as well as at wintering sites (late summer, autumn, winter, early spring).

Time of Day. Choose evening hours. Arrive at the location about 30–40 minutes before sunset.

Location. Look for open spaces—marshes, lakes with reeds, agricultural fields. Birds usually perform their «dances» near their nighttime roosting sites. The show can last about an hour.
By the way, studying murmuration benefits humans too. Mathematical models of this «bird dance» are already being used to create visual effects in movies and video games, in robotics (for controlling drone swarms), and in developing autonomous vehicle systems to eliminate traffic jams in major cities.
