A shoulder bone (humerus) of a young mammoth has been discovered in Mikashevichi, according to Alexey Avlasovich, head of the Center for Archaeology of Belarus at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences.

«Specialists have already examined the find and determined that it is the left shoulder bone of a young mammoth. It is in good condition. The exact age of the bone is not yet known, as analyses are currently underway. It is already on display at the Institute of History. Most likely, it will be kept in our collection, or we may transfer it to paleontologists,» Avlasovich said.

The new exhibit from Mikashevichi was donated to the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus by a local resident. The discovery had been waiting for its moment for 30 years.

«My father worked as an excavator operator at the Granit state-owned production enterprise. They were removing the top layer of sand to reach the granite bedrock, and it was during this work that the bones were found. I was a schoolboy at the time. The find remained in our family’s possession for about 30 years, and I decided it was finally time to hand it over to scientists,» noted Vladimir Mironov.
