‘We are already thinking about long-term safety’: How Belarus minimizes waste from BelNPP

11.05.2026 | 10:48

Aleksandr Rakavchuk, head of the radiation safety workshop at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP), told BelTA’s The Nation Speaks project how Belarus minimizes the generation of radioactive waste.

During technological processes at the BelNPP, three types of radioactive waste are generated based on their physical state: gaseous, liquid, and solid.

«The guiding principle of our work is safety: safety in waste management and safety for future generations. We must not create a burden for future operations. That is why we are already thinking about long‑term safety today,» emphasized Aleksandr Rakavchuk.

Therefore, work is underway at the Belarusian NPP to minimize the generation of radioactive waste. Gaseous waste undergoes special purification before being released through the ventilation stacks of the power units. The degree of purification for air removed from the controlled access zone is at least 99%. Liquid radioactive waste is cemented and placed into non‑returnable shielded containers, which are stored in specialized storage facilities on the plant’s premises. Solid radioactive waste, such as rags, sawdust, tools, and items for which decontamination is ineffective, is compressed, sorted, and also stored within the plant’s perimeter.
